No Motivation = No Training = Depression

Yo!

It's been 3 weeks since I was put in a foot cast with stress fractures.  It doesn't feel any better.  I rode the trainer a little this past weekend, but the foot aches afterwards and I'm not sure if that is helping the healing process?

I am coming out of my non-training depression slowly.  Sounds stupid I know.  I'm not feeling sorry for myself.  I am more pissed than anything, but the realization that I was (and still am a little) depressed has helped me begin to focus.

Sriously - I have 6 months until IM Florida and I need to begin my preparation mentally, and get my focus right.  I can't do that acting like a little baby because I have a little broken foot, right?

My "official" training plan is supposed to begin May 25.  I get out of this boot June 3rd (hopefully) and then I will need to take it easy so that I don't end up right back in da BOOT!

I just wanted to touch base and let everyone know how screwed up my thinking is right now!!!!!!

I have put on 17 lbs since IM NOLA 70.3 and I am eating crap and I actually miss running - Does THAT tell you how screwed my brain is!!!!!! BWAHAHAHAHA!

I go Back to the knee Dr. in one week to see if I should consider surgery to fix my detached knee cap and in 3 weeks for the foot.  POSITIVE THINKING, POSITIVE THINKING, POSITIVE THINKING!!!  I'm not sure how well that works, but I'm all over it right now!

Peace and word to yo mutha's!!!!!  Happy belated Mothers Day.

You still have tons of time before Florida.

Take advantage of it to work on your core strength and flexibility. That will improve your position on the bike, and might save you a ton of time in the end.

Listen to Jim. He is a seasoned age grouper.
Spend more time in the pool also. I know it is boring but it may help keep the weight off. Plus once you start biking again you wont have to practice swimming again. Quite frankly, I would lay low on running more than 6 miles once you are healed. It will help you from re injuring.
You may not get the goal time but you will finish.

Pool, pool, pool...get that yardage up there. Pool running, get your swim on, do it everyday! It's NOT the same but it's a great filler as you buy time.

Something I learned from my ultra was that over training is easier to do than under training. Think about how heartbroken you'll be if you're able to start IMFL, get halfway through, and then have to stop b/c your foot is hurting again b/c you didn't give it enough time to heal.

Now shut-up and eat some celery.

Can I tell you how much I can relate to what you are writing? (Except for the "my foot is in a boot" thing...)

I had the hardest time trying to get my mojo together over the winter. Who knows why.

Perhaps it is our bodies just telling us to enjoy the "fallow" time -- whether imposed by stress fracture or by weather or by ???

You'll get it together and you'll lose the weight again.

Keep the faith.

we understand. I am on day 58 of no running. Like you, my healthy diet has been exchanged for junk, motivation low, depression high. But, I am slowly turning the corner and you will too. Do all that you can do for today. Make a goal sheet visible every day. get your foot healthy. thinking of you and wishing you the best!

I know this depression. You will be better for having to deal with it, but while that challenge is at hand, it's miserable. All of the physical training thats been recommended is fantastic, true and will help the body. It's your mind thats hurting you more. You feed it with your eyes. Your are an athlete (even when youre injured) Read all you can on bike position, running form, watch ironman videos, just fill your mind with the things for you to put into work come early June. Also know this... there are alot more people pulling for you to cross the line in IMFL than you will ever know. I saw you finish one of the Rip Van Winkle races a few yrs ago, and learned of your story shortly after. I've told what I know of your story many times, and the inspiration that it is. Hang in there my brotha.

Hey, don't get down on yourself! However I know this is easier said than done. I agree with all the other posters...swim, do core exercises and quit feeling sorry for yourself and eating crap. You have come too far to let yourself go backwards. By the way...I have lost about 15 lbs and I don't know how many inches since December and my husband is down about 26 lbs in the last 2 months. I still get inspired by you and your story.

I saw your post on BR Tri that your foot is still busted and that you won't be running until September. Remember all these Iron-distance races happen year after year. You only have one body. Take is slow. Don't let your ego rule your body. Don't go the Iron distance until you are ready. Going long before you are ready is not smart and not good for your body.
Start eating right and swim and bike a bunch. Food is your fuel for healing and exercising. Can your doc get you a bone stimulator to speed up the healing? Set up some realistic goals and meet them. Remember the people you have inspired and will continue to inspire. You will get through this.
